Obama Slams Fox News, Rush Limbaugh - Business Insider

Rush obamaIn a sit-down interview with? The New Republic released today, President Barack Obama cast blame on Fox News and Rush Limbaugh for shaping compromise as a "dirty word."

Obama talked about the recent deal to avert the fiscal cliff, saying he thought House Speaker "genuinely wanted" to come to a deal sooner but felt he was vulnerable to attack from the right.

Here's the relevant excerpt:

I think if you talk privately to Democrats and Republicans, particularly those who have been around for a while, they long for the days when they could socialize and introduce bipartisan legislation and feel productive. So I don't think the issue is whether or not there are people of goodwill in either party that want to get something done. I think what we really have to do is change some of the incentive structures so that people feel liberated to pursue some common ground.

One of the biggest factors is going to be how the media shapes debates. If a Republican member of Congress is not punished on Fox News or by Rush Limbaugh for working with a Democrat on a bill of common interest, then you'll see more of them doing it.

I think John Boehner genuinely wanted to get a deal done, but it was hard to do in part because his caucus is more conservative probably than most Republican leaders are, and partly because he is vulnerable to attack for compromising Republican principles and working with Obama.

Obama said the same thing happens with the far left ? but that "left-leaning media outlets" are more willing to accept compromise. In turn, that's why Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi are willing to compromise, Obama said.

Obama also criticized how the media in general shapes partisan gridlock in Washington as a two-party issue. He suggested that it's a handful of conservative Republicans preventing compromise:

[L]et me be clear. There's not a ? there's no equivalence there. In fact, that's one of the biggest problems we've got in how folks report about Washington right now, because I think journalists rightly value the appearance of impartiality and objectivity. And so the default position for reporting is to say, "A plague on both their houses." On almost every issue, it's, "Well, Democrats and Republicans can't agree"?as opposed to looking at why is it that they can't agree. Who exactly is preventing us from agreeing?

Catholic Hospital Under Fire for Arguing That Fetuses Aren't People

Under Colorado law, a fetus is not a person, but Catholic leaders say that's no excuse for one of their hospitals to use that argument to win a legal battle. The debate comes from a lawsuit filed by a man whose wife and unborn twins died at St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City, Colorado. She was seven months preagent at the time and the lawsuit alleges that the hospital was liable for wrongful death because they failed to perform a Cesarean section to save the twins. The case is currently being appealed to the State Supreme Court

RELATED: Abortion Clinic 'House of Horrors' Sparks Debate

In earlier trials, the hospital's lawyers have argued they aren't liable for the death of the twins, because Colorado law states that a fetus is not a person. And legally, they've been vindicated. Two lower courts ruled in their favor. However, many abortion rights advocates have noted the?hypocrisy?of a staunchly pro-life organization?changing its attitude when it's economically?convenient.?

RELATED: Siri Has a Funny Way of Not Knowing Things

More importantly, Catholics have noticed as well, and many are outraged that the hospital would defy Church teachings simply to win a legal battle. William Donahoe of the Catholic League lashed out at the?hospital?on CNN this morning, saying they should be stripped of their Catholic status and that anyone who defies the "natural law" of the Church just to save money is a "harlot." Local bishops have?promised?to review the case, with the Archbishop of Denver saying in a statement that, "No Catholic institution may legitimately work to undermine fundamental human dignity." When other Catholic hospitals are attacked for refusing to perform abortions, and others for refusing to save a fetus, there's simply no side of this issue that won't bring anger down on the Church.

I join all those marching for life from afar, and pray that political leaders will protect the unborn and promote a culture of life.

Turn a Raspberry Pi Into an AirPlay Receiver for Streaming Music in Your Living Room

Turn a Raspberry Pi Into an AirPlay Receiver for Streaming Music in Your Living RoomTurn a Raspberry Pi Into an AirPlay Receiver for Streaming Music in Your Living Room Few things are better than kicking back on the couch and streaming your favorite album wirelessly to your stereo from your phone. It's a remarkably easy thing to do with AirPlay, but if you don't want to pay for Apple's solutions, a $35 Raspberry Pi does the job remarkably well.

Check out the video above for a quick demo of what this project entails, and what you'll get with the final product. With a few tweaks to your initial Raspberry Pi installation, you can turn it into an amazing little device that can receive audio from any AirPlay-compatible device. That means wireless streaming to any speakers you have in the house. Music in the video by Comfort Fit and Jonathan Coulton.

It's Raspberry Pi week at Lifehacker, and all week we'll be showing you some cool DIY projects you can put together with this little miracle of a device. If you haven't bought one yet, check out our introduction to the Pi to learn more about what it is, what you'll need, and the cool stuff you can do with one like setting up a personal VPN and turning it into an XBMC media center.

What You'll Need

Getting the AirPlay receiver up and running on the Pi is easy, but you'll need a few materials first. Here's what you need to pick up:

  • A Raspberry Pi: If you're not sure where to buy one, check out our introduction to the Pi for more info.
  • An HDMI or composite video cable: You'll need this cable to connect your Raspberry Pi to your television or monitor temporarily to get the Raspberry Pi set up. You can get these cheaply at Monoprice if you don't have one already.
  • An 8GB Class 10 SD card (or better) and a card reader (if you don't have one built into your computer): You can go smaller or slower, but an 8GB Class 10 card will get you the best performance, and they're pretty cheap. Most SD cards will work, but some aren't compatible and will therefore cause issues. You can find out which cards are compatible, or locate a place to buy a compatible card with an operating system pre-installed, on this page.
  • A USB keyboard and mouse: Any standard USB keyboard or mouse will do. You'll only need these for the setup process, so whatever you have attached to your computer right now should do the trick.
  • A good quality, micro USB power supply that can provide at least
    700mA at 5V
: Most modern smartphone chargers supply 700mA at 5V, but not all do. Check the bottom of your charger and look for a block of text. You'll see its output values in that text which may read 0.7A instead of 700mA). If it offers at least that much power, you're probably good to go. Just don't use a poor quality charger or you may run into problems.
  • A 3.5mm stereo audio cable : You need this to run the Raspberry Pi into your stereo.
  • Wi-Fi USB Adapter: The Wi-Fi USB adaptor makes it possible to send your AirPlay music from your iOS device to your Raspberry Pi. I used this $10 Edimax one and it worked fine, but you can find a full list of compatible adapters here.
  • USB Sound card: The audio output on the Raspberry Pi isn't that great, so if you want to beef up your sound you should grab a USB soundcard. You can find a list of compatible cards here. I just used this cheap, $5 generic sound card, but a USB DAC will really clean up the sound nicely.
  • Stereo (and speakers): Obviously you'll need to send your sound somewhere, so you'll need a stereo and speakers that allow an audio input.
  • An iOS Device or Computer: You'll need an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, or computer with iTunes installed as a source for your music. Theoretically an Android device with software like doubleTwist would also work, but we haven't tested it.

What You Will (and Won't) Get

The Raspberry Pi makes a fantastic little AirPlay device. When you're done, you'll have a small box connected to your stereo that functions similar to AirPlay-enabled speakers. When it's plugged in and booted up it will automatically load everything necessary to start AirPlay with no need for an external monitor or keyboard. Essentially, it lets you stream music to any speakers you have sitting around for less than half the price of an AirPort Express, and you can still use it for any other Raspberry Pi project you want to take on. That's a serious win-win.

However, the Raspberry Pi doesn't currently support AirPlay Mirroring to send video content. Still, what's nice about using the Raspberry Pi as an AirPlay device for your speakers is that you can continue to use it for any other project you like.

Step One: Hook Up and Configure the Raspberry Pi

Turn a Raspberry Pi Into an AirPlay Receiver for Streaming Music in Your Living RoomThe AirPlay function works with the Raspberry Pi installation of Raspbian. You can follow our guide for getting started with the Raspberry Pi to get Raspbian installed.

If you want the AirPlay receiver to start automatically without the need for a keyboard or monitor, we need to set Raspbian to login you in automatically. During the setup process at the Raspi-config screen, change the "Start Desktop on Boot?" setting to yes. If you're already up and running, type this command into the terminal to load up Raspi-config again:

 sudo raspi-config

Finally, the AirPlay functionality may require a few packages not initially included in your installation, so you want update your packages before you get started. Type this into the console:

sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade

The update might take a little while, so grab a beverage and sit back. Once you're booted up into Raspbian and everything is working properly, we can dig into setting up the AirPlay function.

Note: It's possible to install everything you need using console commands, but we'll use the slightly easier Raspbian interface so that you can continue to use your Raspberry Pi for whatever else you like.

Set Up Your USB Wi-Fi Adapter

Turn a Raspberry Pi Into an AirPlay Receiver for Streaming Music in Your Living RoomFirst off, we need to get the USB Wi-Fi adapter working. This is dead simple with Raspbian installed:

  1. Connect your USB Wi-Fi Adapter to the Pi if it isn't already.
  2. Open the WiFi Config application on the desktop.
  3. Select your adapter from the drop down list.
  4. Sign into your home network.

That's it for the Wi-Fi adapter. If you like, open up the internet browser Midori from the desktop to make sure the internet is working. Raspbian will remember your selection, so even if you disconnect the Wi-Fi adapter at any time during the process it will automatically load up again when it's connected to the Pi.

Set Up Your Sound Card

Next up we need to get the sound card up and working. First off, connect your USB sound card into the Raspberry Pi, and hook it up to your stereo with the 3.5mm audio cable (or plug in headphones so we can test to make sure it works). Now, we're going to use a terminal command to select it. Open up LXTerminal from your desktop and type in the following command:

 aplay -l

Your USB card should display as something like, "card 1: set [device name], device 0: USB Audio." That means it's recognized by the Raspberry Pi. Now we need to test the sound. Type:

 Alsamixer

This loads up the software to test the audio output. Press F6 to change the output type and select your sound card. Now we need to test the output:

 speaker-test

You should hear a tone from your speakers verifying the USB sound card is working. Finally, Raspbian doesn't automatically load the USB sound card when it boots like it does the Wi-Fi USB adapter. This means we have to edit the the configuration file. Type the following:

 cd /etc/modprobe.d sudo nano alsa-base.conf

This opens the alsa-base.conf file. Scroll down near the end of the file and look for this line:

 options snd-usb-audio index=-2

Comment that line out with a "#" symbol at the start of the line. Hit Ctrl+X to save and exit.

Now your sound card and Wi-Fi adapters will both work automatically every time you start the Pi.

Install the Shairport AirPlay Emulator

Turn a Raspberry Pi Into an AirPlay Receiver for Streaming Music in Your Living RoomShairport is the software that actually makes AirPlay work, and it takes a little while to get it all set up. It's not a difficult process, but you do want to give yourself about 30 minutes because it requires a lot of downloading and installing of software.

First off, we need to install a few things before we can get Shairport. Type this into the console:

 sudo apt-get install git libao-dev libssl-dev libcrypt-openssl-rsa-perl libio-socket-inet6-perl libwww-perl avahi-utils libmodule-build-perl

Let this process run for a little while. When it's complete, we need to install an update so Shairport will work with iOS 6 (you can skip this step if you're not on or plan to upgrade iOS 6):

 git clone https://github.com/njh/perl-net-sdp.git perl-net-sdp cd perl-net-sdp perl Build.PL sudo ./Build sudo ./Build test sudo ./Build install cd ..

Once the iOS 6 module is installed (give it a little while), it's finally time to get Shairport installed. from your home directory type:

git clone https://github.com/hendrikw82/shairport.git cd shairport make

Now, let's run Shairport:

 ./shairport.pl -a AirPi

This command starts Shairport with your Raspberry Pi named "AirPi" (you can change it to whatever you want). Grab your iOS device, pick the music app of your choice, and tap the AirPlay button. You should see "AirPi" listed as an output device. Tap that, and the music should start streaming out of your USB sound card within a couple seconds.

But we're not done yet. Shairport doesn't automatically load when you start your Raspberry Pi, and since we want to make our AirPlay device work without any peripherals we need to do one more step. From your home directory, type:

cd shairport make install cp shairport.init.sample /etc/init.d/shairport cd /etc/init.d chmod a+x shairport update-rc.d shairport defaults

Finally, we need to add Shairport as a launch item. Type:

 sudo nano shairport

This loads up Shairport file we need to edit. Look through the file for the "DAEMON_ARGS" line, and change it so it looks like this:

 DAEMON_ARGS="-w $PIDFILE -a AirPi"

Save the file (Ctrl+X), and you're all set. Shairport should launch on startup every time. You can now move the Raspberry Pi anywhere you like and do whatever else you want with it. As long as the USB sound card and Wi-Fi adapter are plugged in, they'll load up when you turn the Raspberry Pi along with Shairport. That means you don't need a monitor, keyboard, or mouse next to your stereo for it to work.

Once you're all set up, all you need to do to use the AirPlay function is plug the Raspberry Pi in, and wait for it to boot up. Once the operating system loads (it takes about 30-40 seconds usually), you can instantly and easily send all your music through the Raspberry Pi.

Take It Further

The AirPlay functionality is just the tip of the iceberg. You can do a lot more with it once the functionality is set up. Here are just a few different ideas that expand the AirPlay functionality in the Raspberry Pi way past the AirPort Express:

A big thanks goes out to Jordan Burgess and Trouch for their guides to getting Shairport repositories installed and adding iOS 6 support.

A first look at Blitz Brigade - an upcoming multi-player shooter from Gameloft

This one's not for the kids -- Blitz Brigade is set in WWII, and is a team-based multiplayer shooter (it reminds me of Battlefield Heros) with plenty of action, and plenty of graphic imagery. We don't know much more than that, only that it's coming to Android and iOS soon.

From the trailer, it looks like it will offer plenty of fun and plenty of blood, which should make it a hit. We'll know more when Gameloft shares a little. Until then, check out the video and imagine this one on your Android tablet.

Assigned Risk Plans - Blocked By Premium Bill Dispute - Workers ...

  • Must be unable to obtain coverage in the voluntary market at a competitive price. Records of declinations (minimum of 2) must be provided, if requested, during the policy period.
  • Presumed good faith eligible for the Plan in the absence of clear and convincing evidence to the contrary.
  • Must not have any outstanding premium obligations or other monetary policy obligations on any previous workers compensation ?insurance that is not subject to a bona fide premium dispute.
  • Must comply with reasonable health, safety, premium audit, or loss prevention requirements.
  • Must allow access to its records for audit or inspection under the policy.
ARP's are usually the insurer of last resort in most states. ?Your company may not be in the ARP due to your E-Mod. ?Insurance carriers may have decided to not write a certain market in a certain states such as dry cleaners, for example. ??

The current writing carriers for the Tennessee ARP are Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, Berkeley Risk Administrators, Hartford Insurance Company, Employers Insurance of Wausau, and Companion Property and Casualty Group.

Your E-Mod was high enough to be a concern, but not high enough to cause you to going into the ARP. ? ?Insurance carriers may consider certain types of employers as too risky to underwrite, even with a lower E-Mod. ?

The reason for the increased premium is that your company was assigned?to a participating carrier. ?Not all of the insurance carriers agree to underwrite companies in the ARP. ?The higher premium is due to the carrier having to write you an insurance policy without having any choice in the matter. ?

These sharp increases in premium can be very expensive. ?There are certain classification codes that differ by over 400% between the regular insurance market and the ARP. ??

The reason for your company being blocked is due to the fact that your pending premium dispute may not be documented properly or that you do not have a bona fide dispute with your previous or current carrier. ? What have you supplied to Assigned Risk Pool in reference to your dispute? ?Please make sure you have not let your policy lapse or your company may incur a very heavy fine.?

Many employers have found it difficult to remove themselves once they have been placed in the ARP. ?Alternatives to the ARP are:

  • Self Insurance - must be a larger company to self insure
  • Captives - a good alternative, your company is still self insured and must bear the brunt of the risk, rent-a-captive is an interesting option
  • PEO's - growing in popularity, a good choice IF you work with the right companies. ?There have been many unscrupulous PEO's in the news over the past few years.

Dayton budget funds innovative scholarships for low-income ...

Buried in Gov. Mark Dayton $37.9 billion proposed budget is a creative idea to improve the lives of the state?s most educationally vulnerable children: state-funded scholarships for preschoolers from low-income families.

It?s an idea first proposed by Art Rolnick, former research director at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, pushed by advocates for the poor for years and that has shown to be successful in a limited pilot program.

Dayton on Tuesday asked legislators for $44 million over two years for the early-learning scholarships for preschoolers, a move that?s drawing praise from an education-reform group and advocates for the poor.

?This is farther than we?ve seen any governor in recent history go,?? said Anita Patel, vice president racial justice and public policy at the YWCA of Minneapolis.

Ericca Maas, who heads Parent Aware for School Readiness, said she was happy to see Dayton's budget included scholarships, which she described as a proven idea and pointed out that?children are waiting. She stressed the need for high-quality programs "to make sure we get maximum return on taxpayer investment.?

Still, the numbers in the governor?s budget fall far below the need, say advocates, who want quality learning opportunities for all the state?s needy 3- and 4-year-old children.

The importance of early childhood education has long been recognized, but the political will and financing to implement programs for all children in Minnesota is building slowly.

?First we want to say how happy we are that the governor took this step and recognized the need for early childhood education,?? said Frank Forsberg, chairman of the Executive Committee of MinneMinds, a statewide coalition of foundations, non-profits and businesses banded together to ask for a learning boost for preschoolers whose families are at or below 185 percent of the poverty line.

?Definitely a step in the right direction,?? concluded Daniel Sellers, executive director of MinnCAN, an education reform group that is also a member of MinneMinds (pronounced minnie-minds).

Missing an opportunity

But the experts agree the governor?s proposal doesn?t come close to meeting the needs of Minnesota?s low-income preschoolers ? MinneMinds sought $185.2 million over the biennium ? and some argue the state is missing an opportunity for big payoffs later.

They cite research that shows that for every $1 spent on high-quality preschool programs, $16 is saved down the line because youngsters enter school ready to learn rather than falling behind the learning curve. Advocates point to a Minnesota Early Learning Foundation report released in 2011 on the benefits high-quality preschool programs and emphasize that up to 90 percent of brain development occurs by age 5.

With proper preparation, they say, children are more likely to graduate from high school and college, acquire good jobs and become good citizens.

That?s why Sellers? organization is standing by the coalition?s initial request. ?By investing more now we can have even bigger returns,?? Sellers said.

Support for the idea has been growing for years. In? the early 2000s, representatives from business and nonprofit leaders formed the Minnesota Early Learning Foundation (MELF) to research? how to cost-effectively prepare children for kindergarten, relying in part on the work and recommendations of Rolnick and Rob Grunewald in a Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis report, which supported early learning scholarships. Learning advocates called for development of an educational rating system as well.

In 2011, MELF and a bipartisan group legislators backed legislation incorporating scholarships and standards. The Legislature appropriated some funding, but it was the Dayton administration that implemented a standards rating system.??????

Competition for money

But like every budget, there?s competition for a piece of the pie. Dayton has proposed for the 2014-2015 budget $40 million for optional all-day kindergarten, ?$20 million for increased access to quality child care as well as the $44 million for early learning scholarships.

?This is a debate between three good options,? Sellers said. All three are important investments, he said, but MinnCAN argues that early action and tying resources to accountability is most critical and that more money should go to preschool scholarships as advocated by MinneMinds.

Under the group?s proposal, which would receive funding in the Dayton budget, parents apply based on income and select the child-care or early-education provider they want for their child. But they must choose from certain ?quality?? learning programs.

That means only early education programs, childcare providers and preschools receiving certification from Parent Aware, a kind of early education seal of approval system and a program in the state Office of Early Learning.? Programs are rated along high standards: stimulating learning environments, age-appropriate curriculums, teacher training and parent communication.?

Under a pilot program, Toniesha Thompson was given a scholarship to pay for her daughter Talaysia?s childcare at New Horizon Academy in Minneapolis, a center with Parent Aware credentials.

The first two weeks the child was there, the then-3-year-old learned her numbers and letters and started singing nursery rhymes, mom says. When the family lived in Texas, she and her baby sister had spent their days with grandma and adults. Now they spend their days interacting with other children, playing games and learning and have become very outgoing.

?Thanks to the scholarship, I?ve been able to keep up with rent, pay bills and put some money aside,?? said Thompson, formerly homeless in Minneapolis, but now in transitional housing as she gets on her feet. She works as a cook at her children?s childcare center and is studying to become a nurse.

Thompson?s other child, Natalia, 2, is also at the center and she hopes there is funding to pay her tuition as well.?

THE RESET: Delay becoming the norm for US gov't

Congress often gives itself more breathing room. In other words, it kicks the can down the road.

It's an overused term nearly everybody scoffs at or denounces. Yet lots of cans litter the road ahead.

The House on Wednesday voted to delay a looming showdown over the government's debt ceiling until May.

"It's not perfect. But perfect may not get passed in this House," said House Rules Committee Chairman Pete Sessions, R-Texas.

Congress and President Barack Obama barely avoided a New Years' Day "fiscal cliff" of mandatory tax increases and spending cuts by scrapping most of the tax hikes and putting off a decision on the spending cuts until March.

The Senate is now weighing a Democratic proposal to put limits on the use of filibusters to delay votes or nominations. Republicans have used the potent tactic to block many Democratic measures ? as Democrats did themselves when they were in the minority

"Some have suggested that one's view of the filibuster depends on where one sits," says House Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Not only Congress delays things.

Obama last January postponed until after the election acting on a Canada-U.S. oil pipeline opposed by environmentalists. A decision is still pending.

Sometimes there are valid reasons for delay.

On Wednesday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton gave long-awaited testimony on Capitol Hill on the deadly Sept. 11, 2012, raid on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. She was to appear last month, but illness forced the postponement.

"We have to recognize we're in for a long-term struggle here," Clinton told senators, referring to that volatile part of the world.

The Senate hasn't passed an annual budget in four years.

So House Republicans have proposed withholding pay for either House or Senate members if their respective chamber fails to pass a budget plan.

They're attaching it to the legislation to delay the debt limit.

The Importance of A Healthy Community - Smooth Fitness

    January 22nd, 2013

Have you ever heard the expression ?Do as I say, not as I do?? In order for a community to be as healthy as possible, leaders, parents and role models need to set a good example. Different cultures and different areas across the nation have different ideas on what a healthy community is.

One definition from Phil Rabinowitz of a healthy community is ?Like a truly healthy human body, a truly healthy community is one in which all systems function as they should, and work together to make the community function well.? In an individual, health is, to a large extent, a result of all the body?s billions of cells getting what they need.? For a community, health is, to a large extent, the result of all citizens getting what they need, not only to survive, but to flourish.?

The Community Action Network explains why Community Health is so important, ?A healthy community reflects a sense of mental and physical well being and is the foundation for achieving all other goals. Good health is often taken for granted but is essential for a productive society. For example, every community needs a healthy workforce upon which to build its economy and healthier students are more equipped to learn and be successful academically. The graph below depicts the impacts and benefits of wellness in the workplace; however this concept is easily applied to any setting including an individual or a whole community. ?

With the New Year?s Resolution season in full force, it is a perfect time for communities to come together to help one another achieve a healthier lifestyle. Treadmills and elliptical trainers are a great way to get your daily dose of exercise whether you are in an office environment, after-school program or working out with your friends and family.? As you can see in the chart below a healthier person is a more productive person to the community and society as a whole in general.

Learning To Make Relocating Warm And Friendly

Almost everything is different whenever you have a family. Not only do you need to deal with day to day life in a unique way, but you also need to deal with the greater events of your daily life in a particular way so that you and your family don?t need to suffer from problems related with anxiety, disorganization, as well as other trouble. One of the larger events within your life that you will need to prepare and contemplate cautiously whenever you have a family group is relocating to a brand new house. Moving is a large change, and if you?ve got a family group, this can mean problems, anxiety, economic distress, and simple trouble. If you have younger kids in the house, this can become even more troublesome. For these reasons, you have to set out early, before relocation day, and arrange for a move which is family friendly. Here?s a couple of methods that you can get started down that route.

Getting help on your side in the very beginning is among the best methods that you can steer clear of challenges and help make relocation friendly for your loved ones. Help can come in a lot of forms, however the easiest and most efficient way to get things completed involves employing a moving business from a trusted web site like www.movingcompanies.us in early stages in the procedure. Having a mover on your side means that you can relax, commit time with the youngsters and help them adjust to the concept of a move, pay a visit to the new neighborhood, and let somebody else worry about the logistical limitations related with the move you are about to undertake. Moving companies can even do the packing for you if you are worried about that aspect, or the time needed to get it completed, so be certain that you start the look for the right moving companies in early stages and employ one that you can trust.

Preparing your youngsters for the adjustments that they?ll face in the near future can really help them come to terms with the fact that the family has to move. Relocation just isn?t simple, particularly when you?ve known one place and one house for the longest time. Help your youngsters by showing them photos or taking them to pay a visit to the new house. Allow them to make plans for their room so that they?re excited about moving. Consider enabling them the opportunity to plan how they?ll decorate, the color they want to paint, or how they want their things set up in that room. Show them details about the school where they?ll be going, in addition to the neighborhood where they?ll live, and help to make the new house as familiar as you possibly can before moving day arrives.

Finally, set up, plan ahead, and speak with your family from the very beginning and all the way through the relocation procedure. No one ever mentioned that relocating was simple, but there are ways that you can make it more family friendly. Keep these things in mind and you will see that such things are feasible, even if you are not quite certain about all of the final outcomes.

French troops take town in central Mali as rebels slip away

DIABALY, Mali (Reuters) - French and Malian armored columns rolled into the central Mali town of Diabaly on Monday after the al Qaeda-linked Islamist rebels who seized it a week ago melted into the bush to avoid air strikes.

Diabaly, 350 km (220 miles) north of Mali's dusty riverside capital Bamako, had harbored the main cluster of insurgents south of the frontline towns of Mopti and Sevare.

Residents said some of the rebels had abandoned their flowing robes to blend in with the local population. The charred and twisted wreckage of their pick up trucks littered the sandy streets between mud-brick buildings.

"French and Malian forces have advanced to Diabaly and they will continue their mission of securing the town," the deputy commander of Malian forces in nearby Niono, who gave his name only as Captain Samasa, told Reuters.

The French commander in the region warned of the risk of mines and booby traps in the insurgents' wake. The region around Diabaly has long been a hub for al Qaeda-linked cells believed to have camps in the Ouagadou forest near Mauritania's border.

France has deployed 2,000 ground troops and its war planes pounded rebel columns and bases in Mali for an 11th day on Monday. Its intervention turned back a column of Islamist rebels heading towards Bamako that threatened to topple Mali's government.

France now aims, with international support, to dislodge the Islamists from Mali's vast desert north, an area the size of Texas, before they use it to launch attacks on the West.

    CAMPS BOMBED

The Islamist alliance, grouping al Qaeda's North Africa wing AQIM and the home-grown Malian militant groups Ansar Dine and MUJWA, has imposed harsh sharia law in northern Mali, including amputations and the destruction of ancient shrines sacred to moderate Sufi Muslims.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Sunday French Rafale and Mirage planes had bombed Islamist camps and logistics bases around the ancient caravan town of Timbuktu as well as Gao, the largest city of the north. The strikes were aimed at preventing Islamists launching a counter-attack.

A resident of Timbuktu told Reuters by satellite telephone on Monday that scores of pickup trucks carrying Islamist fighters had arrived there since Saturday, as the rebels apparently pulled their forces towards their desert strongholds.

The information could not be independently confirmed.

Islamist militants cited France's intervention in Mali as their reason for attacking a desert gas plant in neighboring Algeria, seizing hundreds of hostages. The death toll reached at least 80 after Algerian troops stormed the complex at the weekend.

Veteran jihadist Mokhtar Belmokhtar claimed responsibility in the name of al Qaeda for the Algeria attack, Mauritanian news website Sahara Media said on Sunday. His Mulathameen Brigade has warned it will carry out further attacks on foreign interests in the region unless the war in Mali stops.

On Israel vote eve, Netanyahu fends off surge to his right

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israelis vote on Tuesday for the first time since revolutions convulsed their Arab neighbors, in an election expected to push the Jewish state even further to the right, away from peace with Palestinians and towards greater confrontation with Iran.

After a lackluster campaign, the election could be on course to give Israel the most hardline government in its history, deepening its international isolation and potentially putting strains on its relations with Washington.

Polls - though notoriously inaccurate in the past - predict right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be re-elected, but with a parliamentary majority forecast to shrink, in part because of the rise of a far-right group even more uncompromising than his own ultranationalist allies.

The election finds Israel largely focusing inward at a time when its region is changing faster than ever.

The Arab revolts of the past two years have barely figured in the campaign, and even the center-left Labour Party, once pioneers of talks with the Palestinians, has avoided focusing on a peace process in deep freeze since 2010.

Netanyahu made an election-eve appeal on Monday to wavering supporters to "come home", showing concern over the forecast far-right surge that could see millionaire Naftali Bennett's upstart Jewish Home party place third.

At a final campaign appearance in Jerusalem, Netanyahu voiced confidence his traditional backers would not abandon him, and repeated his stump pledges to keep Israel safe and build Jewish settlements over international opposition.

"I have no doubt that many, many people will decide at the last minute to come home to Likud-Yisrael Beitenu," he said.

"I have a good feeling. And at the last minute, I appeal to each and every citizen going to the ballot box: 'Decide for whom you are going to vote - for a divided and weak Israel or for a united and strong Israel and a large governing party?'"

Bennett, a charismatic former settler leader, advocates annexing parts of the West Bank, a position even to the right of Netanyahu, who still says he supports an eventual Palestinian state on some of the land Israel captured in a 1967 war.

Netanyahu's Likud entered the campaign in an electoral alliance with the ultranationalist Yisrael Beitenu party, meant to shore up his right flank. But the final polls released last week show his list losing 10 seats in the 120-seat Knesset and Jewish Home winning as many as 14.

The polls predict Likud/Yisrael Beitenu and its religious and right wing coalition partners securing a majority of just three seats. Bennett, a former Netanyahu aide, has made no secret that he wants to join Likud/Yisrael Beitenu in a ruling coalition, pulling it even further to the right. He has even put Netanyahu's face on his party's campaign posters.

    IRAN

Netanyahu's relationship with U.S. President Barack Obama has been frosty.

Washington disagrees with his building settlements in occupied territory - which most countries consider illegal but Netanyahu says is a Jewish right derived from the bible - and on the urgency of possible military action against Iran.

During the campaign, parties have avoided discussing the sensitive question of whether and when to use military force against Iran. Netanyahu has said preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons would remain his priority.

Tehran denies seeking atomic arms. The United States and European countries share Israel's view that Iran has nuclear military ambitions that must be halted, but say sanctions and diplomacy are the best ways to persuade Tehran to stop.

A relatively weak showing would make Netanyahu more susceptible to the demands of potential coalition partners, including Bennett.

Visiting Jerusalem's Western Wall shrine on Monday, Bennett said he prayed "to restore Israel's Jewish soul".

"Today we are embarking on a wonderful journey to unite all the parts of Israel: religious and secular and haredi (ultra-Orthodox), all of us together," he told reporters.

Though support for center-left parties has edged higher, their leaders failed to present a united front. Labour is led by Shelly Yachimovich, a former journalist who focuses on economic and social issues and has ruled out joining a Netanyahu-led cabinet. Labour is forecast to place second with about 18 seats.

Other center-left parties, while hoping their bloc can win a majority, have said they could join a Netanyahu-led government, which might reduce its rightward tilt.

Tzipi Livni, a former foreign minister and negotiator with the Palestinians, has promised to work for a regional peace deal. Her Hatnuah party is expected to win fewer than 10 seats.

In the final hours of the campaign, Netanyahu also took new aim at pocketbook issues, after being rocked by figures last week that showed Israel's budget deficit last year was, at 4.2 percent of gross domestic product, double the original estimate.

He announced he would appoint a popular minister to oversee state land allocation with the aim of lowering housing prices.

Polling stations open at 7 a.m. (0500 GMT) on Tuesday and close at 10 p.m.. Immediately after voting ends, Israeli media release exit polls, with official results due the next morning and party leaders already beginning informal coalition talks.

No one party has ever won a parliamentary majority in Israel, and its president traditionally asks the leader of the biggest bloc to try to form a governing coalition.

Tips on Building Relationships with Evaluation Stakeholders, Part 2 ...

?It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.?
    Ralph Waldo Emerson

This post is part 2 in a series of posts dedicated to the committed stakeholders I?ve worked with over the past year, who continue to inspire me to follow their example of helping others. This post continues where we left off from my previous post on tips to build relationships with stakeholders, inspired by lessons learned and a recent fundraising letter I received from my alma mater.

    Share a vision

Remain positive and communicate a central idea?a vision that will take your program

onward and upward.?? The fundraising letter gradually built up to this vision: ?everyone deserves

a chance.?? Build relationships and talk to participants and staff to help build a mutual vision

    that resonates and revitalizes.

Encourage participation in the evaluation, regardless of amount or type.

Every bit counts.? Key stakeholders can participate in different ways.

Encourage stakeholders to give the gift of time.? Seek new ways to involve them. Invite them to share their responses to evaluation-related drafts such as surveys, evaluation plans and especially evaluation reports.? Offer evaluation-related training to increase your organization?s capacity.? I have found our community partners and volunteers to be incredibly valuable allies in planning evaluations.? They have experienced the needs that the programs address.? They are experts in their own rights.? I am so thankful for their heartfelt advice and the gift of their time.

    Time it right.

Isn?t timing everything?? The letter arrived in my mailbox during the holiday season, when some may be more inclined to give.? Consider signs of readiness to participate in evaluation-related ?? activities.? What is the energy level of the group?1 How enthusiastic are people?

    Be willing to listen.

The fundraising letter related a firsthand account of a student?s story.? Do your best to hear from program participants directly.? Evaluation offers a more objective and systematic way of collecting this information.? I appreciate the value of gathering evaluation data from interviews and focus groups, that is, qualitative data:? such methods offer a glimpse into participants? lives and can lead to insights that a survey cannot.? This is what I enjoy most about the work I do?getting to know the real people whom we serve.

    ?Stop, look and listen.?

I?ve been learning recently the need to:

    1. Stop! ?Stop myself??my own preconceived notions, plans and ideas1.
    2. Look! Observe body language and context of people?s comments1.
    3. Listen! Stopping and looking helps me to listen to what is really being said and to what is not being said.

Sharing the stories of people we?ve listened to has the potential to impact program decision-making.

These are 7 ways that a fundraising letter?s message stayed with me.? I hope these seven tips also help us strengthen our relationships with our own evaluation stakeholders.

Many of us desire to give back to our communities in some way.? We desire to reach out and touch the future?to play a part in bringing about tangible outcomes that make the world better place.? Let?s nurture that desire to give in the stakeholders of all our evaluations.

Use a Rubber Band to Keep Your Laptop's Power Brick from Slipping Off Your Desk

Use a Rubber Band to Keep Your Laptop's Power Brick from Slipping Off Your DeskIf your laptop cable isn't long enough to sit the power brick on the floor, redditor agentdax5 has a great trick for keeping it on your desk: just wrap a rubber band around it.

The rubber band will keep it from slipping and sliding around, letting you put it wherever you want without fear it'll fall off the desk (and yank the rest of your cable with it). Plus, then when you take it with you, you can wrap the cables under the rubber band (if your power brick doesn't already have a built-in mechanism for this).

Frogs Cling to and Peel from Surfaces Just Like Adhesive Tape

Experiments with White's tree frogs show that the amphibians angle their limbs to get more traction on overhanging surfaces

frog The amphibians angle their limbs to get more traction on overhanging surfaces. Image: THOMAS ENDLEIN

Australian tree frogs hang from tilted surfaces using the same physics as adhesive tape, experiments have found.

White?s tree frogs (Litoria caerulea) secrete mucus from their toe pads to hold on to steep surfaces through capillary forces, similar to the way a wet piece of tissue sticks to a window. In this video, the researchers place a frog on a platform and begin to tilt the platform up to a vertical position (90? in the counter at top left) and then continue rotating until the frog is hanging upside down and eventually falls off (typically at around 150?).

The frog starts out in a crouching position with its legs tucked under its body. As the challenge increases, however, the amphibian engages in a sprawling dance.

The researchers found that this splaying behavior is rooted in the same physical principle that applies to adhesive tape. The easiest way to peel tape away from a surface is by pulling one corner away at the largest possible angle from the sticking surface; pulling the tape at a shallow angle makes it virtually impossible to get unstuck. Australian tree frogs mimic this effect by stretching their limbs to maintain a shallower angle with respect to the platform as it rotates, the researchers write in Journal of the Royal Society Interface.?

    ?

?This experiment shows the maximum adhesive force a frog can take,? says Thomas Endlein, a biologist at the University of Glasgow, UK, who led the study. ?But usually frogs would avoid overhanging surfaces to avoid such difficult sprawling positions.?

W2W4: Knicks vs. Pistons in London

When the Knicks beat the Pistons in their first matchup on Nov. 25, they had one of their best 3-point shooting nights: 17-for-33 (51.5 percent). That was sparked by the ball movement of starting point guard Raymond Felton, who finished with a game-high 10 assists.

Can Iman Shumpert, who has been getting reps at point guard in practice, establish some drive-and-kick opportunities in his season debut? The Knicks are also hoping his perimeter defense leads to some more fast-break opportunities. When that happens, they're one of the best 3-point shooting teams in transition, led by Carmelo Anthony.

Here are three other things to watch for, starting at 3 p.m. ET:

    1. Can the Knicks keep the Pistons off the boards? This is Detroit's strongest quality. Fueled by Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond and Jason Maxiell, they're one of the best rebounding and second-chance-scoring teams in the NBA. The Pistons play big and they like to start in the post through Monroe, who's a skilled lefty and underrated passer. The Knicks will have to keep an eye out on backdoor cuts because Monroe is always looking for those.

The Knicks have been sporting a smaller front line lately, but they did a good job against a taller, interior-oriented opponent in the Hornets this past weekend. The Knicks battled on the boards and finished with 45 -- above their season average. They'll have to get physical inside once again in London.

    2. Can Melo and the Knicks get off to a better first quarter? In their past seven losses, the Knicks dropped the opening period each time. Even in their win over the Hornets, they went down 29-22 early on. On offense, they weren't moving the ball well and Anthony was not presented with many open looks to pull off his quick release. In the first half, he had to grind against multiple defenders and take some difficult fallaway shots down the baseline. Overall, in the past three games, he has been way off in the first 12 minutes.

Defensively, the Knicks struggled guarding the Hornets' pick and roll. Greivis Vasquez and Eric Gordon got in the paint too easily. Shumpert should help in that regard, but his minutes will be limited to three- to four-minute stretches. So it's going to take a total team effort to make stops. Intensity and communication needs to be there at the jump.

    3. Can Chris Copeland continue his hot shooting? The rookie started against the Hornets and poured in 22 points in 30 minutes. He had 11 first-quarter points -- the only Knick to really get anything going -- and he had seven key points in the final period, including a 3-pointer with 9:41 remaining to give the team a 13-point lead. His 3-point shooting, especially, will help the Knicks space the floor better, and it should free up some feeds to Tyson Chandler down low. The center hasn't hit 10 points in two straight games.
