What is Mike Hopkins' career record as a Syracuse player and coach? Mike's Mailbox

Post-Standard basketball writer Mike Waters answers readers? questions about the Orange, the Big East, all of college basketball and just about anything else. To submit a question, email Mike at mwaters@syracuse.com

Q: Recently, you printed Coach Boeheim's win-loss record as player, assistant and head coach. With that in mind what is the win-loss record of head coach-in-waiting Mike Hopkins as a player and assistant coach?

Eric N.

Mike: Syracuse is in a unique situation. Actually, two unique situations.

First, Syracuse is one of only a few schools with an assistant coach who is already tabbed as the successor to the current head coach with Mike Hopkins as the confirmed choice to succeed Jim Boeheim. San Diego State is another example with Brian Dutcher set to take over when Steve Fisher decides to retire.

Second, Syracuse is the only NCAA Division I school with a coaching staff made up entirely of alumni. There?s Boeheim (SU, ?66), Hopkins (?93), Adrian Autry (?94) and Gerry McNamara (?06).

So while Eric asked for Hopkins? combined win-loss record as a player and a coach, I couldn?t stop there. I had to look up Autry and McNamara?s records, too.

Hopkins played at SU from 1988 to 1993, but I didn?t include SU?s record during the 1988-89 when Hopkins redshirted. In the four years that Hopkins played, Syracuse went 94-32 (.746). Hopkins joined Boeheim?s coaching staff in 1995. In the 18 yeas he?s been on the SU bench, including this year, the Orange is 451-155 (.744). That?s a combined record of 545-187 (.744).

Autry played at Syracuse from 1990 to 1994. In those years, Syracuse went 91-32 (.739). Autry joined Boeheim?s staff prior to the start of last season and in the last year and a half Syracuse is 49-4 (.924). That?s a combined mark of 140-36 (.795).

McNamara played at SU from 2002 to 2006. Syracuse?s record was 103-32 (.762) during his career. McNamara was a grad assistant at SU in 2009-10 and 2010-11 and he?s been a full-time assistant since the start of the 2011-12 season. In the past three and a half years, Syracuse is 106-17 (.861). That?s a total win-loss record of 209-49 (.810).

Q: Mike, will the format for the Big East Tournament continue the same with the top 4 seeds receiving the double-bye?

Brian L.

Mike: The Big East has just 15 teams this year with the departure of West Virginia to the Big 12. And the conference tournament will actually have just 14 teams because Connecticut is ineligible for post-season play. But the Big East will use a format that?s very similar to its recent tournament bracket.

The top four seeds will receive double-byes into the quarterfinal round. The 5 through 10 seeds will get byes into the second round. In previous years, only seeds 5 through 8 got those byes.

The first round now consists of just two games, instead of four. On Tuesday, March 12 at Madison Square Garden, the 12 seed will face the 13 seed at 7 p.m. with the 11 seed playing the 14 seed in the second game of the double-header.

Q: The official scorer's report is mistaken in the Providence game. It says that Baye (Keita) only played 2 minutes and that Rakeem (Christmas) played 38. Both numbers are wrong.

Baye entered the game for Rak at 10:19 mark in the first half. Rak came back in at the 7:35 mark. Baye came in again for the final 1:09 of the first half.

In the second half, Baye came in at the 12:44 mark. Rak replaced him at the 7:22 mark.
By my count Baye played 9:15 and Rak was in the rest of the time. Can you explain?

Nate

Mike: Nate was all over this one. I didn?t break it down as precisely as Nate did, but I knew there was a mistake in the post-game box score because the halftime stat sheet had Christmas with 16 minutes played and Keita with four. So the final numbers were impossible.

I?m not sure what led to the mistake, but the schools? officials corrected the error. A corrected box score shows Christmas with 31 minutes and Keita with nine for the game.
