Iran says Israel should draw 'red line' for itself

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran on Saturday said that, instead of drawing a "red line" for Iran, Israel should draw one for itself and its nuclear arsenal, the ISNA news agency reported.

The "red line" has become an ongoing phrase in the war of words about Iran's nuclear program, with Israel saying the world needs to lay down such a line to show Iran how far it may be allowed to progress with its nuclear program.

"The prime minister of the Zionist regime (Israel) with his painting at the UN, should be told that, if having the atomic bomb is crossing a red line, then he should draw this for the Zionist regime which has tens of nuclear warheads," Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said.

The minister was referring to Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu, who literally drew a "red line" on Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program Thursday night with a graphic depicting Iran's nuclear program as a drawing of a bomb while addressing the UN General Assembly.

"Which country is more dangerous? A regime with nuclear weapons threatening another country with a military attack or a country which is in favor of nuclear disarmament and pursues peaceful nuclear programs within international regulations," Vahidi asked.

While Iran's government took the speech by Netanyahu quite seriously, normal Iranians were reportedly rather amused by the Israeli premier and his bomb illustration.

Eastern Congo city sees rise in violence

GOMA, Congo (AP) ? Authorities in Goma say five people were killed this week in shootouts linked to the increase in Congolese army troops here.

Since the beginning of May, the Congolese army has been fighting against a new group of rebels called M23. Thousands of troops were deployed to reinforce the army forces fighting the rebels.

The rise in troops around Goma has increased insecurity in the provincial capital. Residents report gunfire in the city virtually every night.

In the past week several people were killed, spreading fear throughout the city. Local authorities have instructed people to stay home after dark and the streets of Goma have become eerily quiet after 7 p.m.

A Congolese army spokesman denies the troops are to blame for the increase in violence in Goma.

Pepper-spraying California taxpayers

UC has reached a $1 million settlement with UC Davis students who were pepper sprayed at an Occupy-inspired Nov. 18 demonstration to protest rising tuition. UC will pay student plaintiffs $30,000 each, and the ACLU will pocket up to $250,000. Everything that is wrong in California resides in this story.

For $30,000, I'll get pepper sprayed.

Students think tuition costs too much, so what do they do? Sue the university - it has deep pockets.

This episode began because students know that if they stood around smoking pot and demanding more money from Sacramento, the administration would be tickled pink. UC brass and students are in complete agreement on this issue. Thus, if students want to get arrested and bask in their fictional oppression, they must set up tents in an illegal encampment or lock arms so that police cannot do their job.

That's what happened at UC Davis. Students surrounded campus cops, who warned students that if they didn't disperse, they would be subject to the use of force and pepper spray.

They stayed. They videotaped. They sued. That's how so-called civil libertarians conquer. They break rules designed not to squelch free speech, but to protect everyone's right to public space. Then they sue, secure in the knowledge that state officials will settle with them.

UC spokesman Steve Montiel explained that the university "estimated it would cost more to take it to trial." It's a class-action lawsuit, so other parties cannot sue.

I see the point. I also believe that UC inevitably will buckle in any case with a "social justice" element. Remember how, lest famished or parched activists fall from a tree, UC Berkeley delivered energy bars and water to tree-sitters who trespassed on campus for two years. At the University of California, there's always a safety net for protest, lawful or otherwise.

These students chose to get arrested - and the pepper spraying was memorialized on camera. Still, UC spent close to $1 million investigating the episode. A task force concluded that the pepper-spraying incident "should and could have been prevented."

The campus police chief and two officers no longer work for UC. Eleven students were treated for the ill effects of pepper spray. The Yolo County district attorney announced last week that no officers will be prosecuted because guilt could not be proved "beyond a reasonable doubt."

In a statement announcing the settlement, the ACLU announced it will use the money "to advocate for free speech rights and other fundamental civil liberties." In other words, university solons have managed to feed the ACLU money to fuel the next legal complaint based on a manufactured violation of free-speech rights.

ACLU attorney Michael Risher counters that the students were breaking a campus rule, not a criminal law. Some suffered "excruciating pain," and they should "get some compensation for that."

The $30,000 payments are close to what it costs to attend UC Davis for a year, Risher added. He'd rather have a system where culpable officials pay damages instead of taxpayers, but "unfortunately, that's not the law."

It might be that UC students have to work to get arrested, he added, but "the folks at segregated lunch counters, they were working to get arrested" too.

No, those civil rights heroes were fighting for equal rights. They had real grievances. African Americans were targets whether they chose to be or not. They weren't privileged recipients of a top-notch university education partially subsidized by California taxpayers.

Risher told me that the lawsuit will improve university policies so that "something like this never happens again."

Of course it will happen again. UC academics encourage students to think of protest as an integral part of a college education. As a result, some students clearly are more interested in a long-term gratifying protest experience than mastery of rich academic content.

UC President Mark Yudof even assigned a university associate vice president to implement a different report on how UC should manage protests. That's her full-time job for a year.

As part of the settlement, Chancellor Linda Katehi will send these students written apologies. Spokesman Barry Shiller wants you to know that Katehi has been apologizing ever since the incident and she's very sincere. Why wouldn't students see themselves as blameless victims who were entitled to break campus rules? There's a $1 million payday to prove it.

The next UC settlement, I think the ACLU should demand that the offending yet craven UC biggie has to clean the protesters' dorm rooms.

Huge Parade Marks Ulster Covenant Centenary

Up to 30,000 people are marching in an Orange Order parade in Belfast to commemorate the centenary of the signing of the pro-Union Ulster Covenant.

Thousands of spectators have also lined the streets to watch the event, while a huge cultural festival is staged in the grounds of the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont.

The march and festival are being held to mark the 1912 proclamation against plans for Home Rule in Ireland.

A major security operation has been mounted, focusing on potential flashpoints along the route of the march.

Negotiations have been going on for months in Belfast to try and ensure the centenary is marked whilst not disrespecting the nationalist community.

The first leg of the marching past St Patrick's Church in the north of the city saw a group of catholic protesters gather with black flags and banners asking marchers to "Show Some Respect".

Despite some over exuberant drumming by band members those who had organised the protest felt reasonably content.

Orange Order march in Belfast.
The parade passes St Patrick's Church in Donegall Street

Frank Dempsey, leader of the Carrick Hill Concerned Residents' Committee, told Sky News: "It could have started something but happily it didn't."

"The only thing I'm hoping for on the return journey is that they keep it down a wee bit," he added.

The Parades Commission, which rules on controversial marches, has placed restrictions on both marchers and demonstrators by St Patrick's.

The church has been the scene of disorder during the summer after a band was accused of playing sectarian music outside on July 12.

Those taking part in the parade have been ordered to play only sacred music while passing the church.

A legal attempt at Belfast High Court by a resident to overturn the commission's ruling failed.

The number of protesters in the area has also been limited to 150 people.

The same music restriction has been placed on bands passing St Matthew's Catholic Church in Newtownards Road close to Stormont.

Politicians of all parties have appealed for calm at the event, which is set to be one of the biggest loyal order parades ever in Belfast.

YouTube Related Music Is a Slick, Endless YouTube Player [YouTube]

YouTube Related Music Is a Slick, Endless YouTube PlayerThere's no shortage of YouTube playlist generators out there, but most of them are a bit funky to use. YouTube Related Music is simple and looks great.

To use YouTube Related Music, you simply need to type in the name of a song, select the video you want, and the webapp generates a playlist. You can get rid of the next upcoming song, but you can't reorder the rest of the playlist. YouTube Related Music uses the same related API that YouTube itself uses, so its results are best suited for more popular music. Still, as an endless player that's free of ads, it's another great option to add to your music discovery toolkit.

Daily Kos: New survey: Americans don't want insurance rates tied to ...

Doug Heller

The Consumer Federation of America released a new report earlier this week assessing consumer views on the factors insurance companies use to set premiums around the country. ?Not surprisingly, Americans think that insurance rates should be based primarily on motorists' driving safety record (87% and 85% of respondents believe rates should reflect a driver's number of accidents and tickets, respectively).

More than a majority of Americans think it's unfair to consider the ZIP-code in which you live or your occupation. ?More than two-thirds (68%) call it unfair to charge drivers more if they did not have insurance because they did not previously have a car. ?This data point should interest Californians, because there's an initiative on the November ballot ?- Proposition 33 - that would allow insurance companies to penalize people based on this precise factor that 68% of Americans consider unfair.

Proposition 33 was put on the ballot by Mercury Insurance's billionaire Chairman, and his $8 million campaign conveniently ignores the fact that the initiative allows insurance companies to raise prices on drivers who didn't previously have insurance because they didn't have a car. No doubt, his pollsters are telling him the same thing that the national survey reports: Americans don't think his scheme is fair. ?(So if people think your initiative is unfair, your only option is to run a deceptive ad campaign filled with disingenuous patriotism and hope people can't see the trick you've hidden behind that flag.)

But back to today's report for a moment. Another interesting thing Consumer Federation did was look at rates around the country and show the effect of a variety of rating factors, including prior insurance coverage. ?Two things stand out:

  1. Where most companies in most states dramatically jack up the rates on customers who do not have prior insurance when they want to buy a policy, Californians' premiums are unaffected by that factor because it is illegal to apply it in California. ?The whole point of Prop 33 is to make California more like these other states in a bad way.
  2. Generally speaking, rates in Los Angeles, California are both lower than the other big cities tested and more stable after testing for factors considered unfair, such as ZIP Code, occupation, prior insurance and credit scoring. ?In other words, the insurance reforms Californians installed through Proposition 103 in 1988 not only apply standards of fairness to the marketplace, they have created a competitive and lower priced market as well.

Samsung's Green Management Gets SMART Upgrade - Samsung ...

We can?t emphasize enough the importance of conserving the environment to ensure a sustainable livelihood for all of us. Environment protection also makes up a crucial pillar in running businesses and that?s why we, at Samsung, have taken numerous initiatives for green management.?

?

?????(111025)
Samsung embracing the blue planet

?

Earlier this month, we have taken our initiative further to announce SMART Green Management efforts in meeting the growing demand of the era for balanced development of the economy, environment and society.

The SMART Green Management strategy consists of the following five concepts:?

  • Sustainability: execute green management as core strategy for sustainable management
  • Market: explore new markets by solving environmental problems
  • Advantage: seek additional advantage of creating profit through environmental conservation
  • Restructuring: conduct business restructuring to be more focused on environmentally friendly strategy
  • Transparency: strengthen transparency to better communicate and cooperate with society

?

The new initiative was announced at the seminar hosted by Samsung Global Environment Research Center at the 2012 IUCN World Conservation Congress (WCC), which took place on the Korean island of Jeju between Sept. 6 and 15. It is the world?s biggest environmental conference held every four years.

Samsung sponsored the event by providing 1,500 Galaxy Note 10.1 devices and about 60 LED Smart TVs not only to make it more convenient for the participants to access the Internet, but also to eliminate the use of paper by enabling them to take notes on the devices and send questions to the presenters real time electronically. And we all know less use of paper means more trees saved!

?

Samsung devices put to use for meaningful cause

?

?We expect SMART Green Management will provide new directions for a company in pursuing green management, finding new growth engines from solving environmental problems and implementing corporate social responsibilities related to the environment,? according to Mr. JaeBong Paik, president of Samsung Global Environment Research Center, dedicated to research into the environment and safety.

Samsung Global Environment Research Center was established in 1993, attesting to the long history of green management at Samsung. Among various initiatives undertaken as part of our commitment to creating a prosperous world for the humanity and preserving the global environment is declaration of Samsung Green Management Vision 2020 in January 2011.

?

Vision 2020

?

The vision calls for becoming a global top company in green management by upholding the two values of ?pursuing sustainable growth? and ?practicing social responsibility.? We try to realize this vision by achieving mainly three objectives: preserving resources and reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions; leading the global green management standards and markets; and preventing the environment and safety incidents and ensuring business continuity.

Conserving biodiversity also makes up an important part of our green management and that?s why Samsung Global Environment Research Center hosted a seminar on the topic of ?Biodiversity and the Corporate Role.? Representatives from the World Resources Institute, an environmental think-tank, and global companies such as Hitachi and Dow Chemical Company got valuable moments to discuss various corporate programs aimed at sustaining biodiversity during the seminar.

Our Samsung Electronics affiliate also got a chance to introduce its numerous biodiversity conservation efforts launched across the globe from conserving the Amazon rainforest and its natives and tree planting in China and India to cleaning up the river in the Philippines and building bird houses in Slovakia!

Steam for Linux entering private beta in October for just 1,000 users

Image

Next month, Valve is inviting 1,000 fortunate gamers to take part in the first external beta test of Steam for Linux. The trial includes the service itself and one game (which we're taking to be Left 4 Dead 2) that'll run on systems running Ubuntu 12.04 and above. Users won't get their hands on any other Valve titles, or Big Picture Mode, and the company is asking that only experienced Linux users get in touch -- novices are politely asked to wait for a subsequent release. It'll offer up details of how to sign up shortly, and given the love for the Valve's other products, we suspect it'll be a little oversubscribed.

Officer critical after being shot during child porn raid

In California, one of the two veteran San Diego deputies wounded in a gun battle is recovering after being shot by a suspect accused of possessing child porn. KNSD's Tony Shin reports.

By Lauren Steussy and Tony Shin, NBCSanDiego.com

One of two veterans in the San Diego Sheriff's Department injured in a gun battle in Lakeside, Calif., is in critical condition, law enforcement sources said Tuesday night.

Detective Ali Perez and Sgt. Craig Johnson were reportedly shot and injured by Daniel Witczak after confronting him Tuesday afternoon in a Lakeside apartment complex, sheriff's department authorities said.

For more visit NBCSanDiego.com.

Witzcak, 30, was confronted by the deputies for allegedly keeping pornographic images of his girlfriend's children on his cell phone with the intention of selling them, according to his girlfriend.

???????

Perez was in critical but stable condition Tuesday night, sources told NBC San Diego. He was shot at least twice with a high-powered gun, including once in the stomach.

Johnson was shot in the arm and is expected to recover.

Confronted about child porn, man shoots two deputies in San Diego County

Lt. Duncan Fraser from the sheriff's department said both endured hours of surgery after being transported to the hospital.

?It?s too early to tell,"?Sheriff Bill Gore said of the deputies' condition, "but any time you have major gunshot trauma, there?s great cause for concern.?

NBC San Diego

A shooting victim arrives at the hospital following a gun battle in San Deigo, Calif.

Detective Perez is an 18-year veteran with the department who is assigned to the Child Abuse Unit. Sgt. Johnson is a 23-year veteran with the department who is assigned to the Santee station.

Fraser said he knows Perez well, and that for him to be assigned to the Child Abuse Unit demonstrates that he's "a good detective and has the ability to do a good, thorough investigation."

Perez was one of the deputies who found 15-year-old Charles Andrew Williams, the suspect in the Santana High School shooting of 2001.

The entire sheriff?s homicide detail was at the scene of the shooting investigating and canvassing the area, Fraser said. They secured a warrant to investigate the residence early Tuesday evening.

One of the deputies is married to an employee with the San Diego Police Department, SDPD Chief Bill Lansdowne said.

"This is a very difficult day for the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and everyone in law enforcement," Gore said to reporters after one of the deputies had just gotten out of surgery. "It?s a constant reminder of what our law enforcement officers in this country face every day."

Witczak was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, according to a hospital source. There is no word yet on his condition.

The girlfriend told NBC San Diego that she was getting her two daughters ready for school when she found pornographic pictures of her boyfriend and her two daughters engaged in sex acts on his cell phone. Her boyfriend told her that he planned to sell the photos for $50,000 to a child porn site.

The woman said that after the deputies stormed the apartment, her boyfriend shot the two deputies with a high-powered rifle and then shot himself.

My Garden Diaries: garden inspiration

?I have always loved gardens. ?From as far back as I can remember, I would plan and think about garden designs. ?Growing up in Chicago, I remember going to my great-aunt's home for family parties. ?Your typical Chicago bungalow filled with lively Italians and FOOD! ?What struck me when I was a child was Aunt Tina's garden. ?With a cannoli in hand, I followed my cousins out the back door and was mesmerized by what I saw. ?Tall brick walls inclosed the small Chicago lot. ?Beautiful vines creeping up the old brick and large statues throughout the garden surrounded by flowers and greenery. ?A formal design with many of the same characteristics as the garden below.

How consumer-electronics makers are faring

Makers and sellers of consumer-electronics devices have been releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. Here's a look at selected companies that report unit sales on phones, tablet computers and other devices. Some companies including Samsung Electronics Co. do not release data on unit sales.

? July 19: Microsoft Corp. says it shipped 1.1 million Xbox 360 consoles during the April-June period, down from 1.7 million a year earlier.

Nokia Corp. says sales of smartphones dropped 39 percent from a year ago to 10.2 million in the second quarter. The company blamed "strong momentum" of competing smartphones. All regions showed a decline except North America, where sales of the new Windows-based Lumia line offset declines in traditional Symbian devices. Sales of all cellphones fell 5 percent to 83.7 million.

? July 24: Apple Inc. says it sold 26 million iPhones, 28 percent more than a year ago. It also sold 17 million iPads, an 84 percent increase. But average selling prices for both products were down. Apple sold 4 million Macs, a 2 percent increase, and 6.8 million iPods, a 10 percent decline.

TomTom says it sold 1.7 million personal-navigation devices in North America, down from 2.1 million a year ago. In Europe, it sold 2.4 million, down from 2.8 million. TomTom says market share was relatively flat at 45 percent in Europe, but down to 19 percent from 23 percent in North America because of a GPS chip product issue.

AT&T Inc. says it activated 5.1 million smartphones in its latest quarter, down from 5.5 million in the same period a year ago. Much of the decline came because AT&T subscribers are holding on to their phones longer.

? July 25: Nintendo Co. says it sold 710,000 Wii units in the April-June quarter, down from 1.56 million a year ago. Nintendo is coming out with a successor, the Wii U, this year. It is forecasting 10.5 million units for the full fiscal year, which ends in March 2013. The company, meanwhile, sold 540,000 DS units, down from 1.44 million a year ago, and it sold 1.86 million 3DS units, up from 710,000 a year ago.

? Aug. 1: Garmin Ltd. says it sold 3.9 million GPS navigation and other devices in the second quarter, up 4 percent from a year earlier.

? Aug. 2: Sony Corp. says it sold 2.8 million PlayStation units, down from 3.2 million a year earlier. The figures cover both PlayStation 3 and the older PlayStation 2. Sales of the PlayStation Portable and Vita devices were at 1.4 million, down from 1.8 million a year earlier.

? Sept. 6: Samsung says global sales of its Galaxy S III smartphone have surpassed 20 million in a little more than three months. Samsung Electronics Co. launched the flagship smartphone powered by Google's Android operating system in Europe in late May. The U.S. got it in June.

? Sept. 24: Apple Inc. says that it sold more than 5 million units of the iPhone 5 in the three days since its launch, fewer than analysts had expected. The sales tally is a record for any phone, but it beats last year's iPhone 4S launch only by a small margin. Apple said then that it sold 4 million phones in the first three days.

"Gangnam Style" hit doubles value of Psy's father's stock

SEOUL (Reuters) - A pop star whose song "Gangnam Style" became the first Korean hit to top Apple's music download charts has also worked his magic on his father's software firm, helping it double in value since singer and dancer Psy burst onto the global scene in July.

Psy's father, Park Won-ho, is the chairman and controlling shareholder of South Korean semiconductor company D I Corp and its market capitalisation has surged to 113.5 billion won (62.4 million pounds) on the main Seoul bourse, making it as of Tuesday the 459th most valuable stock measured by size.

Psy's "Gangnam Style", which mocks the rampant consumerism of a rich Seoul suburb, went viral on video-sharing website Youtube. The video has been viewed more than 267 million times on Youtube since it was released in mid-July.

"The positive sentiment from 'Gangnam Style' has attracted investors just because of the fact that the company is owned by Psy's father and uncle," said Lee Sun-tae, a researcher at NH Investment and Securities, who added Psy is not a shareholder in the company.

"The popularity will slowly dissolve in time, naturally."

South Korea's legion of retail investors, mainly middle-aged people, tend to jump on speculative stocks.

Software millionaire Ahn Cheol-soo, who this month announced he would run for the country's presidency, saw the value of his company Ahnlab Inc.'s shares slide after his bid.

Ahnlab stock was down 30 percent on Tuesday compared with its closing level a week ago, just a day before he made his announcement.

Trader Joe's recalls peanut butter

(AP) ? Trader Joe's is recalling its house brand of peanut butter over fears of possible salmonella contamination.

The voluntary recall of Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter was announced Friday on the Monrovia-based company's website. No specific lot numbers are available.

Officials with the specialty grocery chain said they were acting "out of an abundance of caution," stressing that there are no confirmed reports of contamination.

Trader Joe's is offering refunds.

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment.

Using artificial intelligence to chart the universe

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Astronomers in Germany have developed an artificial intelligence algorithm to help them chart and explain the structure and dynamics of the universe around us with unprecedented accuracy. The team, led by Francisco Kitaura of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics in Potsdam, report their results in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Scientists routinely use large telescopes to scan the sky, mapping the coordinates and estimating the distances of hundreds of thousands of galaxies and so enabling them to create a map of the large-scale structure of the Universe. But the distribution that astronomers see is intriguing and hard to explain, with galaxies forming a complex 'cosmic web' showing clusters, filaments connecting them, and large empty regions in between.

The driving force for such a rich structure is gravitation. This force originates from two components; firstly the 5% of the universe that appears to be made of 'normal' matter that makes up the stars, planets, dust and gas we can see and secondly the 23% made up of invisible 'dark' matter. Alongside these some 72% of the cosmos is made up of a mysterious 'dark energy' that rather than exerting a gravitational pull is thought to be responsible for accelerating the expansion of the universe. Together these three constituents are described in the Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) model for the cosmos, the starting point for the work of the Potsdam team.

Measurements of the residual heat from the Big Bang -- the so-called Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation or CMBR emitted 13700 million years ago -- allow astronomers to determine the motion of the Local Group, the cluster of galaxies that includes the Milky Way, the galaxy we live in. Astronomers try to reconcile this motion with that predicted by the distribution of matter around us and its associated gravitational force, but this is compromised by the difficulty of mapping the dark matter in the same region.

"Finding the dark matter distribution corresponding to a galaxy catalogue is like trying to make a geographical map of Europe from a satellite image during the night that only shows the light coming from dense populated areas," says Dr Kitaura.

To try to solve this problem he developed a new algorithm based on artificial intelligence (AI). It starts with the fluctuations in the density of the universe seen in the CMBR, then models the way that matter collapses into today's galaxies over the subsequent 13 billion years. The results of the AI algorithm are a close fit to the observed distribution and motion of galaxies.

Dr Kitaura comments, "Our precise calculations show that the direction of motion and 80% of the speed of the galaxies that make up the Local Group can be explained by the gravitational forces that arise from matter up to 370 million light years away. In comparison the Andromeda Galaxy, the largest member of the Local Group, is a mere 2.5 million light years distant so we are seeing how the distribution of matter at great distances affects galaxies much closer to home.

'Our results are also in close agreement with the predictions of the LCDM model. To explain the rest of the 20% of the speed, we need to consider the influence of matter up to about 460 million light years away, but at the moment the data are less reliable at such a large distance.

'Despite this caveat, our model is a big step forward. With the help of AI, we can now model the universe around us with unprecedented accuracy and study how the largest structures in the cosmos came into being."

(AP) ? Klein Michael Thaxton hadn't been much of a Facebook devotee. He posted no status updates in two years on the social network. On Friday, though, he surfaced with a jarring post: "i cant take it no more im done bro."

The 22-year-old Army veteran was on the 16th floor of a downtown Pittsburgh office building at the time, armed with a hammer and kitchen knife and holding a businessman hostage, police said.

He surrendered after more than five hours. Neither he nor the hostage, business owner Charles Breitsman, 58, was injured. But Thaxton's real-time Facebook updates ? coupled with online pleas by his friends to surrender ? vividly illustrated the evolving challenges that confront police when social media plays an active role in a crime-in-progress.

In all, Thaxton sent seven messages, many of them despairing and written in disjointed style.

"this life im livin rite now i dnt want anymore," said one post. "ive lost everything and I aint gettin it back."

Thaxton's friends responded by urging him to end the situation peacefully, including one who asked him to think of his mother.

"dude, you gotta purpose here in life, and this ain't it yo, people do care man, they do," another wrote.

Thaxton's mother, Ronda Thaxton, was at the scene working with negotiators. She said she last saw her son several weeks ago and had a feeling he was troubled.

Initially, police wanted his Facebook page kept open, hoping to gain useful information, but they later asked Facebook to take it down so that he could focus on communicating with authorities.

The Facebook exchanges had the potential to help and to harm those efforts, police Chief Nathan Harper said. It was helpful that Thaxton could see "that people are concerned about his well-being," the chief said, but "it is a distraction for negotiating."

Hours into the standoff, Pittsburgh's public safety director, Michael Huss, asked the media to refrain from reporting about the Facebook page, though many outlets had already done so.

Thaxton served as a private in the U.S. Army from December 2008 to June 2010. The Army said he trained at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri before being assigned to Fort Riley in Kansas.

He also has a criminal record, including a guilty plea to robbery earlier this year in a special county court for military veterans with mental health or addiction problems.

The hostage-taking was the latest striking example of how Facebook and other social media can inject the public into crime dramas in ways that were inconceivable in the pre-Internet age.

In the old days, police would call the telephone company and ask that the hostage-taker's phone number be changed immediately so no one else could call it, said Gary Noesner, a former chief of the FBI's crisis negotiation unit.

In this case, countless people had the ability to communicate with Thaxton, sending him comments and potentially provoking him, "for better or for worse," said Steve Jones, a professor who studies online culture at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

"We don't really know what the perpetrators pay attention to," Jones said. "Is he reading every post? How does he interpret those posts? What might set him off or what might get him to calm down?"

A former criminal profiling expert with the FBI, Mary Ellen O'Toole, said the decision by police to ultimately shut down Thaxton's Facebook page made sense, just as there was reason to leave it up in the beginning.

"You really do have to be very careful. It may not take much to make that person even more erratic, more irrational," she added, noting that negative posts "could really cause him to go terribly sideways."

Harper said police counted 700 posts, most of them helpful to police in that they expressed concern for Thaxton or encouraged his surrender. But some were "ridiculous" and others "outright distasteful," the chief said. If police determine any of the posts urged Thaxton to harm Breitsman or himself, those posters could face charges.

The hostage owned CW Breitsman Associates, which runs employee benefits programs for other businesses.

Thaxton rode a bike to the high-rise and took an elevator to the 16th floor because he didn't have proper security cards to get into the highest floors, Harper said.

Investigators determined that Thaxton picked the office at random after noticing through a glass door or window that Breitsman had an iPhone, computer and TV in his office that Thaxton, correctly, believed he could use to call attention to himself, Harper said.

Investigators would like to know why Thaxton wanted to create a public spectacle, Harper said, "but we will leave that to the mental professionals to figure that out and get the man some help."

Thaxton was charged with kidnapping, terroristic threats and aggravated assault and may be charged with escape once police identify the halfway house where he was living after a recent carjacking conviction, Harper said.

Thaxton saw Breitsman's name on an office door and asked for him by name but didn't know Breitsman or have any connection to him, Harper said.

Police spokeswoman Diane Richard said Breitsman was able to meet with his family after Thaxton surrendered a little before 2 p.m.

"He is doing OK at this point, a little shaken up," Richard said.

Facebook did not comment on the Pittsburgh hostage-taking but referred reporters to a page describing how it works with law enforcement. The page says Facebook may share information with law enforcement if deemed necessary to "prevent imminent bodily harm" to someone.

The social network's nearly 1 billion users come from all walks of life, including criminals. Some of them boast about their exploits on Facebook, often making it easier for law enforcement to track them down.

Last year, a Utah man named Jason Valdez posted updates on his Facebook page during a 16-hour standoff with police. According to reports at the time, some of his friends and relatives urged him to "be careful" while at least one tipped him off to the location of a SWAT officer.

In another Utah case last year, a woman used Facebook to seek help after she and her 17-month-old son were held hostage at a residence for nearly five days. According to police, the woman hid in a closet with a laptop to post her plea for help, saying she and her son would be "dead by morning" if they were not rescued.
