CHARLOTTE, N.C.- President Obama easily won Wisconsin in 2008. But it's expected to be a lot closer this November.As the nation's debt ticks past $16 trillion, there's a lot of debate on how to deal with that.Democrats say if Republicans cut spending, they'll end up cutting jobs.Racine's Mayor John Dickert has seen his city's unemployment rate drop from 17 percent to 12 percent -- a city that also falls within Congressman Paul Ryan's district.Dickert worries Republican promises of cutting spending could hurt critical government spending on infrastructure projects that create jobs. "If you are not investing in cities there's one thing you can be guaranteed off, you're not going to grow you economy," said Dickert to TODAY'S TMJ4's Charles Benson.Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett shares the same concern.Both mayors and former Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle point to light rail -- a form of urban rail public transportation that generally has a lower capacity and lower speed than heavy rail and metro systems --as an infrastructure project this country needs to have a debate on."The most obvious way for job creation that the government needs to do is (develop) infrastructure..." said Doyle.But Wisconsin Republicans have already said "no" to big government projects like high-speed rail saying the state doesn't need it can't afford it.
