Microsoft on Tuesday accidentally revealed pricing for its much-anticipated Surface Windows 8 tablet. Apparently, someone got a little too excited and the pricing was pulled just moments ago.
Based on the screenies, the Surface will start at $499 for the 32GB version and a 32GB variant with the cover will cost $599. A 64GB version will also be offered. This matches up well with the pricing found on Apple's iPad, which currently starts at $499 and tops out at $799.
In terms of hardware and specs, the Microsoft Surface RT tablet is expected to sport a dual-core S4 processor and dual cameras. Other possible features include 2GB of RAM and a massive battery. Unfortunately, the leaked page does not list specs, so we may just have to wait for a tear down to be sure.
Microsoft has been careful when discussing Surface pricing over the past few months, so it is humorous to see it was accidentally published. Rumors pegged it as low as $199, but $499 seems realistic, although still too expensive in my opinion. The page looked ready to go, so I'm sure it was real.
With more and more cheap, yet capable Android tablets on the market and the coming iPad Mini, Microsoft is going to have a tough time convincing consumers to buy the Surface. It will be interesting to see what happens.
